How much is your time worth?

Filed under: Questions and Answers — Practice Success @ 9:48 pm

If you are like me, you can find lots of excuses to waste time. Writing emails. Checking stuff out on the web – my worst time-waster is Wikipedia (www.wikipedia.org ) which has information about nearly everything in the world. Two other recent time-wasters:

1. I’ve discovered lots of blogs about all kinds of interesting subjects. And I can click on “Google this” and get the blog postings delivered to me in my customized Google home age (another time-waster here). Then instead of writing blogs and articles to promote my business I end up checking out these blogs, which of course lead to other blogs, etc. etc.

2. Second Life.com – Don’t go here – it’s terribly addictive. I would say it’s a cross between a high level video game, a chat room, and QVC. No kidding. You get to choose an avatar (image to represent you), then you can buy clothes for the avatar, and you can buy land (if you have enough money), and start building stuff. See what I mean?

THEN, I ran across a web site that showed me how much money I was losing by all this time-wasting stuff. You input your annual salary, number of weeks you work a year, and number of hours you work a week. I’d guess I am losing over $100 an hour by these time-wasters.

Here’s the website:

(But don’t waste too much time here ;-)

A great blog for positive success

Filed under: Questions and Answers — Practice Success @ 8:59 pm

First, I have to tell you about a synchronistic event. I was writing about a quote relating to gratitude. At almost the same moment, I saw this blog, which I just found, and the blogger’s post for today was about … yes, gratitude.

By the way, here is the quote:

Feeling grateful or appreciative of someone or something in your life actually attracts more of the things that you appreciate and value into your life.  Northrup Christiane

I want to tell you how much I believe in the powerful law of the universe called “synchronicity.” It’s a concept first discussed by psychologist Carl Jung.

Put plainly, synchronicity is the experience of two or more occurrences (beyond coincidentally) in a manner that is logically meaningful- but inexplicable- to the person or persons experiencing them. Such events would also have to suggest an underlying pattern in order to satisfy the definition of synchronicity as developed by Jung. (This paragraph is from Wikipedia – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synchronicity

The greater synchronicity is that I found this guy named Steve Pavlina, who writes a personal development blog. He has lots of informationon the blog about the Law of Attraction and about how manifest your intentions. EXCELLENT STUFF. Go to the blog at http://www.stevepavlina.com/blog/

BEWARE! THE ULTIMATE BSO!

Filed under: Questions and Answers — Practice Success @ 8:26 pm

Ok, you’re probably wondering what a BSO is.  It’s a “bright shiny object” -something that attracts you and which detracts from your primary focus (starting your practice).  These BSO things are everywhere.  They are the books you want to read, the TV show (Law and Order, CSI) you have to watch, the places you want to hang out.  They are everything and anything that keeps you from doing what you need to do in order to start your practice and make it successful.

And I have just found the ultimate BSO – It’s called “Second Life” and it’s a virtual reality world where you create your image (called an “Avatar”) and where you can wander around and buy things and chat with people and generally waste tons of time.  It has some beautiful places that look almost real, and it has some dangerous stuff (like casinos).  I found it yesterday and I finally had to call a halt.  Today  I wandered around a little more and decided it had to quit.  It’s a bit like the late 1980s when Nintendo came out and I sent my kids to bed and ended up playing all night.  I had to give it up completely.

Some people are addicted to cigarettes or candy or drugs or something; I can become addicted to these computer games, so I don’t play.  I originally wanted to get on there to see if I could sell books.  I don’t see at this time that this will work.  Maybe later.

Anyway, if you want to get on, go to “secondlife.com” and have fun.  But beware of the BSO.

New Year’s Resolution: Stop Procrastinating NOW!

Filed under: Questions and Answers — Practice Success @ 9:13 pm

“Everybody should do at least two things each day that he hates to do, just for practice.
William James

On my list of MUST DO’s every day is “Do something you have been putting off.”

Here’s what happens when you do this:

1.  You get rid of one of those internal “nags” and you put it behind you.

2.  You can reward yourself – eat a piece of dark chocolate, spend some time doing something fun.

3.  You feel like you’ve accomplished something.

My other daily “TO DO” requirements:

Every day I

1.  Do something mental – read, research, study something.  I usually try to read, but if I don’t have time, at least I spend some time on Wikipedia during lunch, checking out the random wiki fact.

2.  Do something physical – I try to walk at least 2 miles a day, usually 3, or use the elliptical at home for 30 minutes.  I listen to a book or watch tv, depending on what exercise I’m doing.  At least 5 days a week.

3.  Do something for myself – something I need to do in order to feel good.  A “small indulgence,” like the piece of chocolate or just taking a few extra minutes in the shower.

4.  Do something for someone else – call someone who is alone, or do something special for my husband or other family member.  Or send some money to a favorite charity, or just a “Random Act of Kindness.”

5.  Do something to further my dream.  I keep a day timer and list 3 things to do every day.  If I get them done, I get to add 3 new things for the next day.  If I don’t get them done, I keep moving them forward until they’re done.

6.  And, of course, the “do something you’ve been putting off” thing.

The best thing about this list is its balance – internal and external – mental and physical – doing things for self and for others, and getting rid of past things and moving on to fulfill my dream things.

Try it sometime!

Today, make your “putting off” thing buying Planning for Practice Success.  It will also move you forward toward your vision.  And if you are not completely satisfied with it, we will cheerfully refund your money.  Go here to buy:   http://dcpracticesuccess.com/p4ps_orderpage.html

Tacking (not “tacky”)

Filed under: Questions and Answers — Practice Success @ 10:01 pm

“The voyage of the best ship is a zigzag line of a hundred tacks.”
Ralph Waldo Emerson

From Wikipedia:

A tack or coming about is the maneuvre by which a sailing boat or yacht turns its bow through the wind so that the wind changes from one side to the other. This is contradictory to a jibe which is turning the stern of the boat through the wind.

In small boats with low booms, the skipper should generally announce, “Ready about” to prepare the crew for the tack and the swinging of the boom, which can otherwise cause serious injury to an unprepared crew member. Upon the acknowledgement of the crew, the skipper announces, “Coming about”. or alternatively “Helm’s a-lee”, “Hard a-lee”, or “Lee Ho” during the actual tacking.

Before tacking, it is in good practice to have a considerable amount of speed before doing so in order to complete the tack. If a vessel hasn’t enough speed to complete a tack, the wind may overpower the boat’s turn, thus forcing it back on its previous course, or the vessel may become in irons, not moving at all.

An auto tack is when a sailboat turns its bow through the wind by accident. This is usually occurs when a steady hand is not kept on the tiller or steering wheel. Auto tacks are more likely to occur when a sail boat is close hauled.

Tacking or beating to windward may also refer to the process of beating a course upwind, back and forth, without actually coming about.

Are you going full speed ahead?  Don’t forget to TACK, to keep on course.
